全書的悲劇在這一節發生,史坦貝克寫得極其平靜。柯利的老婆問雷尼為什麼那麼迷兔子,雷尼想了很久才說出真相:「我喜歡摸好東西……軟的東西。」她居然懂:「誰不喜歡?我喜歡摸絲綢和天鵝絨。」她說自己的頭髮又軟又細(「柯利的頭髮硬得像鐵絲」),拉起雷尼的手放到頭上:「摸摸看,這裡有多軟。」
